In 1980, a top-secret organisation called SHADO (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organisation) was founded in response to unprovoked alien attacks on earth. Commander Ed Straker led this elite international military unit that protected an unsuspecting world from fear and panic.
SHADO had at its disposal (for the time) state of the art technology. This included a base on the moon armed with ‘Interceptors’, a fleet of aircraft / killer sub combinations (known as ‘Skydivers’) and then sophisticated squadrons of tracked vehicles called ‘Mobiles’. UFO’s were being engaged in our space, our atmosphere, on our land and in the depths of our oceans.
It was soon discovered the Aliens were a sickly race, coming from a resource-depleted planet. Many had human transplanted organs. While the Aliens attacked relentlessly, their numbers were minimal. SHADO stood it’s ground and slowly grew…until in 2030 the UFO’s failed to come at all and all incursions appeared to cease. During the next few years the very expensive, very secret organisation was sharply scaled down. Amidst cries of anguish and dismay (especially by the now frail and retired Major General Edward Straker), SHADO was officially disbanded in the winter of 2036.
In the next three hundred years technology advanced beyond anything dreamed of in the 1980’s. Man had survived and even flourished out in space. New races of beings were encountered with varying degrees of friendship, aloofness and hostility, but still no contact with the now mythic beings that had threatened our home three millennia previously. In 2369 an unexpected and totally unpleasant discovery was made. A year later a new, once again secret organisation was commissioned.
QUELLSHADOW was formed in the spring of AD 2370 under the direction of the youthful, short and slight of build, General Guy Gibson. A mammoth task lay ahead for this young commander.
